Band MembersJulie McKee - vocals
Steve Lawson - bass and looping.

The songs in the player are rehearsal demos - one take unedited performances while we were learning the songs - no, they aren't commercially available, but add us as a friend and you'll be the first to know when we release a CD!

InfluencesAll the people whose songs we cover - Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, The Cure, Slipknot, Green Day, Kate Bush, John Martyn, The Police, Suzanne Vega, Gorillaz, Robert Flack, Louis Armstrong, Carol King etc. etc.

Tuck And Patti, Eva Cassidy, Shawn Colvin's 'Cover Girl' CD, Tori Amos' 'Strange Little Girls' CD, and all the amazing covers she does live, Jack Johnson, Norah Jones, Michael Manring, David Sylvian, Holly Cole, Cleveland Watkiss, BJ Cole, more to come...

Sounds LikeEva Cassidy or Tuck and Patti trying to win a bet for the most unlikely choice of cover versions. They win the bet, and inadvertantly come up with a stunning set list!

   About The New Standard

Julie McKee and Steve Lawson - The New Standard

[PLEASE SEE JULIE AND STEVE'S SOLO PAGES, LINKED BELOW, FOR WHAT THEY ARE BOTH UP TO AT THE MOMENT - THE NEW STANDARD IS ON HIATUS, WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS... KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR FUTURE GIGS AND NEWS VIA JULIE AND STEVE'S WEBSITES AND MYSPACE PAGES - THIS IS CURRENTLY JUST A PAGE FOR INFO AND TO LISTEN TO A FEW OF THE TRACKS... SEE BELOW FOR THE PRESS RELEASE FROM OUR RUN AT THE 2006 EDINBURGH FESTIVAL]

Vocal and electric bass duo redefining the concept of standards to include songs by The Cure, Slipknot and Green Day alongside Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield in a chilled lounge-jazz setting.

Julie McKee and Steve Lawson are an unlikely musical pairing. Shes best known for her beautiful interpretations of jazz standards and hes a solo bass guitarist, more readily at home in the world of ambient electronica and free improv than vocal jazz.

But when Julie started looking for a project in which to demonstrate the full breadth of her talent, she ran into Steve, an instrumentalist whose main influences are almost all singers.

The pair searched right across the worlds of rock, pop and alternative music for songs that suited their combined skills. In his solo career, Lawson has been lauded internationally for his use of looping - recording and layering his bass, all live without any pre-recorded sounds and he brings that to the duo with Julie, looping and layering her voice into four-part harmonies, making the pair sound like a much bigger group.

The song search led them to some interesting places from nu-metal pioneers Slipknot through to Stevie Wonder, via The Cure, Green Day, John Martyn and Kate Bush. Our only criteria, says Lawson, was that they were great songs. Were not bothered about style, we just want great songs that we can put our own stamp on. A great melody is a great melody, whether its Slipknot or Beethoven.

McKee and Lawson are no strangers to the Edinburgh Fringe, Lawson having played critically acclaimed solo shows for the last two years, and McKee performing last year with her own jazz quartet, when she recorded her live album, Live at The Lot.

With The New Standard, McKee and Lawson bring to the festival a music show thats fun, classy and surprising - think Eva Cassidy with a mischievous sense of humour. Its certainly a show for fans of great music that breaks down stylistic boundaries and promises to be the best way to end a magical Edinburgh day!

A lot of people have asked, but I've lost track of who. So this is to let you know that my new CD, "Deacon Blues", is finally available, most easily on Amazon.com. It features 2 of my favorite guitarists - Joe Beck & Mike DeMicco, drum legend Danny Gottlieb, my brother Tony on bass, and more.

Best wishes, and thanks for letting me do this little ad.

You transcribed "Close To You"?!? Now that would be worth an overseas flight!

We were actually doing it in our set for the first few weeks of the tour. Our beer-drinking, prog-rock audiences responded, uh ... politely but were clearly confused, so we dropped it. No sexism intended, but I think it'll go over much better if people have Julie to look at rather than me.

Jul 24 2006 3:11 PM

Hi guys, first of all thanks for adding Attica Rage - hope you appreciate our hard rockin heavy metal toons!

Had to post a comment to say how refreshing you are here on MySpace - not only great cover versions (with a good choice of songs - we're fans of Slipknot, The Cure AND Kate Bush too!!) but also how nice to hear a vocal and BASS duo rather than the usual acoustic guitar! One of the few Myspace profiles where you actually want to listen to all the tracks on the player.

All the best with your live shows at the Festival and we'll try and get along to your Glasgow gig at Brel.

Good stuff - keep it up!

Cheers!

Hi Julie, Steve.

Listening to your tracks this morning - (I love Vermillion by the way) - I was thinking of my friend Mike Visceglia who's been out doing a bass/vocal duo with Fiona McBain. Not an easy way to perform. You guys are doing it beautifully.

Thanks for adding me.

Regards,

Pete
